Notes about the album:
The heart of “Move Forward Like the Seasons” lies in a collaboration between vocalist Yuwan Zhang and the incredible pianist and jazz ensemble director, Jeffrey Chappell. Jeff guided Yuwan during her undergrad years at Goucher College, and their shared experiences shaped these songs. The first four tracks—Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most, Summertime, Autumn Leaves, and Blackberry Winter—are inspired by their “Season Tour,” a series of jazz ensemble concerts from 2017 to 2019. Four years later, these pieces have evolved into the piano-vocal arrangements that form the core of this album.
The title “Move Forward Like the Seasons” comes from one of Yuwan's favorite songs, “Seasons,” by Greyson Chance. Greyson's mother once told him, “We don’t grow up with years but with the rotation of the seasons,” and Yuwan feels this deeply resonates with her journey. It’s a reminder that, like the seasons, we transform, grow, and evolve. Naming the album after this wisdom is Yuwan’s way of honoring her path—and Greyson’s influence. To this day, seeing her music alongside his on platforms like Spotify is a dream come true.
This album is also a collage of memories, captured in photos taken by Yuwan and her friends Marc Li and Jamie Yang from 2017 to 2023. The cover art tells a story of change, growth, and reflection. Move Forward Like the Seasons is a celebration of the past, present, and future, and a reminder that, no matter what happens, we always carry the ones we love in our hearts. That’s why Fly Me to the Moon closes the album—a tribute to the connections that keep us grounded.
